You can make the argument that playing for a tie would have resulted in overtime.
These were the defending MTAL champions Stevenson was facing.
And the Pirates were home.
Yet, Stevenson coach Bruce Dini put it all on the line, going for two late in the fourth quarter in a one point game against Pacific Grove.
Didn't happen.
The result. A heartbreaking 7-6 loss to Pacific Grove.
"Never a doubt in my mind to go for two,'' Dini said.
It was the right call.
Scoreless for three quarters, Dini knew there might not be another chance against that first team Breaker defense, which gave up its first points of the season in league play.
Why play for overtime?
The Pirates offense was struggling against a championship caliber defense. It mounted a drive late in the game. It had the momentum.
Pacific Grove made a play on the two-point attempt. That's what championship teams do in crunch time.
But don't fault Dini for having the confidence in his kids -- a roster of 22 players -- to win the game. That will go a long ways in the locker room.
