Friday's game
Carmel (5-2) at Soledad (5-2), 7:30 p.m.
After five consecutive home games, the Padres will close the season with three straight Friday night games.
Which may not be a bad thing since Carmel is 2-0 on Friday's this year.
Defense has carried the Aztecs all season as they have allowed just 23 points in the first half, three in the second quarter.
Carmel has produced 163 points in the first half and is averaging 49.8 points a game in four Mission Trail Athletic League games.
Something has to give.
Andrew Hernandez has been a pass rushing demon for Soledad with eight sacks as well as returning a fumble 82 yards for a touchdown.
The Aztecs have nine interceptions this season, with Robert Lopez and Johnny Sanchez having both returned one for a touchdown.
As much as the Padres like to air it out, you still have to respect the run as three different running backs have rushed for over 100 yards in the last four weeks.
Soledad can never lose sight of 6-foot-4 tight end John Stivers, who is averaging just under 20 yards a catch this year, with a lot of those yards coming after the catch.
Not only is Stivers a dynamic receiving threat, but he's a devastating blocker when the Padres run the ball, which has been more frequent
Playing on Soledad's thick grass field may take some adjusting, since the Padres have played six of their seven games on turf.
The last time Soledad beat Carmel was in 2000 when head coach Frankie Berlanga was a two-way starter in purple.
