In his only season as the head football coach at North County, John Villa changed the culture almost overnight, taking a program that was 0-10 in 2013 to 5-5 last season.
He appeared to have the program on stable ground, as the numbers are up, as well as the cumulative grade point average of the entire program.
Villa wanted to be here for the long haul. But personal reasons are forcing him to return to Madera to be closer to family.
That's understandable.
Unfortunately the timing isn't good in attempting to find a head coach with practice less than 70 days away.
North County will be enduring its eighth head coach in nine years.
The most logical choice at this stage would be hiring one of his assistants on an interim basis.
It's too late to bring in a new coach and put in a new offensive and defensive system.
North County is slated to scrimmage Carmel on Aug. 28.
