With 10 consecutive wins, an argument can be made that the Breakers have been the best team in the second half of the Mission Trail Athletic League season.
But a 1-2 start in league has come back to haunt the defending champions, who still cling to hope of sharing the title going into tonight's finale against Santa Catalina.
Defense has triggered Pacific Grove's charge towards the postseason as it has held nine of its last 10 opponents under 33 points.
Senior forward Jessica Matthews has come up big in clutch situations, averaging 10 or more points and rebounds a game during the teams run.
Santa Catalina fell by a point in its last meeting with Pacific Grove. Senior Madison Fox has carried the offensive load all season, averaging nearly 18 points a game.
Guards Audrey Bennett and Mikayla Revera have been thief's on defense. Bennett has 10 or more steals in two of her last five games while Revera is averaging nearly six steals a game.
