CCS Open Division consolation
Friday's game
No. 4 Serra (7-4) vs. No. 2 Palma (9-2) at Rabobank, 2 p.m.
Allowing players to move on to their winter sports after a first round loss, Palma could look like a different team in the consolation round of the Open Division.
With this game being nothing more than an exhibition, head coach Jeff Carnazzo brought up eight junior varsity players with an eye on next year.
Of course, the WCAL co-champion Padres may be doing the same thing. Nothing is at stake in the consolation bracket this year.
If Serra brings its 'A' team, quarterback Hunter Bishop has thrown for over 900 yards in just seven games. The team is 5-2 with him as a starter. Demetri McCoy has 38 catches.
Where would Palma be without sophomore tailback Emilio Martinez, who is 203 rushing yards off the single season school record.
The Chieftains are 8-0 when Martinez rushes for over 100 yards while playing more than a half, 0-2 when he doesn't.

Palma was #3 seed. Serra has a young team as well. As sophs (JV) they defeated Palma at home. Lots of young talent. I can see the Palma basketball players (Wrs) and a couple wrestlers opting out, but probably most of the line and those interested in playing on after high school will play. Some of the sophs up from JV should get some time as well. Overall a good game to look at next year. The sophs and some of the back up juniors are very strong at WR, and DBs. The JV soph RB is also going to be very good next season. Palma offense is going to be loaded next season. Defense should be very good as well (both sophs and juniors had excellent players on defense). They will be one of the top preseason rankings in CCS next season with Serra (#1) and VC. Probably a top 2-5 in CCS next season to start. Bishop for Serra (who transferred from St Francis)will be a D1 QB, but has rum for improvement as he started the season late. Serra has lots of injuries as well so will they will probably play lots of young players as well for experience.
The players were brought up for VC game before this Serra one.
The kid to watch on Serra is QB/athlete Soph Nunn. Bishop is a traditional QB and usually in on passing. If Serra runs the wing they often use Nun. Serra's other special player a Junior is out due to injury. I guess the game will be more like a scrimmage, but still a good benchmark for next season.
