CCS Division I semifinals
Friday's game
No. 4 Piedmont Hills (7-4) at No. 1 Salinas (7-4), 7 p.m.
These two teams are no strangers, having faced each other the last two years, with a win a piece.
The Pirates win was a little more significant as they knocked Salinas from the playoffs last year -- the only time during its run of seven straight appearances that it didn't reach the semifinals.
Both games were wild shootouts, with the first one to 50 winning.
Last week was the first time in 11 games that Piedmont Hills wasn't involved in a game that required 40 or more points to win.
This is a Pirates team that has given up 50 or more points twice, but has scored 50 or more points twice.
Marcus Romero has thrown for 2,582 yards and 27 touchdowns for the Pirates, with three receivers with 45 or more catches.
After a 1-3 start, the Gabilan Division co-champion Cowboys are 7-1. This defense has found itself in the last two games, allowing just one touchdown after opening up a 34-point lead.
Last week Bruce Leighton and Nick Dainty both scored defensive touchdowns for Salinas while quarterback Zach McDermott broke the single-season passing record.
