Football Tour I

Monterey (8-4, 5-1)
Will Monterey -- dare I say -- throw the ball more frequently this fall?
I would be stunned if the Toreadores didn't.
Junior quarterback Carter Aldrete can wing it. Now, I don't see Monterey throwing for 2,000 yards.
But Aldrete's arm is a weapon that needs to be used, particularly with Michael Armstead and Ryan Reynolds flanking the outside.
A more complete package only enhances a ground game, anchored by the return of junior Akili Jones and senior Sky Keller.
"We have two good running backs. We call them the pretty boys,'' Monterey offensive lineman Dustin White said. "We have to keep them going this year.''
While the Toreadores have some holes to fill on defense, having lineman Christian Martorella in the trenches is a good starting point.
If there is one game that should be circled on Monterey's calendar, it's Palma. Failure to hold second-half leads in their last two meetings with Palma has kept them from two Gabilan Division titles.
With Soquel and Menlo-Atherton on its non-league schedule, you cannot accuse Monterey of a soft non-league schedule.
Check The Herald's website for an interview with Monterey coach Tom Newton.
