What began in February comes to fruition in May.
Unlike most sports, team titles in track essentially boil down to one meet - the league championships.
One false start, one bobbled handoff or tripping over a hurdle ends a season and perhaps a teams title hopes.
Pressure? How about nerves?
Surviving Tuesday's Monterey Bay League Gabilan and Pacific Division trials is the first step.
The Gabilan Division trials will be at North Salinas, with the Pacific trials slated for Watsonville. The finals for both divisions will be on Friday at Gilroy High.
Barring any surprises or misfortunes, Palma will ride into the finals the heavy favorites to repeat the feat for a third straight time in the Gabilan.
The Chieftains are arguably a top five team in the Central Coast Section, anchored by section long jump leader Chase Pacheco, who has soared a school record 23-6 1/2.
Pacheco will be a favorite as well in the high jump and 100 meters, and runs a leg on the Chieftains 400 relay team.
A healthy Devin Hinson has seen the senior hurdler drop a second off his time, climbing to No. 2 in the CCS in the 300 intermediate hurdles (38.92).
The battle for the boys Pacific Division title isn't so clear cut. Watsonville and Monterey were within four points of each other in a dual meet. Don't discount defending champion Seaside.
The Spartans Cordell Reed, a section finalist last year in the 100, will be the favorite in the 100 and 200.
Coming off a school record time and CCS leading 4:15.31 in the 1,600, Monterey distance ace James Welsh will be the favorite in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.
