The creation of the Open Division for the CCS baseball playoffs has eliminated Division III.
Oh, there are still three divisions.
But points become a bigger factor for 'B' League type teams trying to get in as an at-large entry.
Right now, it's unlikely a fourth team from the Mission Trail Athletic League would get in as an at-large entry.
Not enough points.
Four teams would have qualified last year out of the MBL's Pacific Division. This year, the second place finisher will not be a lock to get in.
And while the Open Division was created to put the best 'A' League caliber teams into one bracket, no one figured a 'B' League team would get in.
Well, as of Wednesday, Pacific Grove had the 13th most points in the CCS, although two straight losses might change that. Sixteen teams have to fill the Open Division bracket.
Regardless, there is no Division III title for Pacific Grove to defend this spring.
Don't be surprised if another division is created next year.
