Top 8 track meet

You don't want to put to much emphasis on what occurs this evening in what has traditionally been regarded as a prelim to the Central Coast Section finals.
For starters, not all of the elite athletes in the CCS are competing tonight at San  Jose City College.
Plus the section finals are still five weeks off.
A lot will change between now and then.
That being said, this is a mid-term for some athletes, a wake-up call for others.
Decisions about what an athlete may pursue in five weeks could occur tonight.
That won't be the case for Chase Pacheco, who is currently the CCS leader in the long jump for Palma by nearly 18 inches at 23-6 1/2. He's also ranked third in the high jump at 6-6 along with Carmel's Nick Lombardi.
Mario Gonzalez comes into the Top Eight meet ranked second in the discus at 161-1. The North Salinas senior is also ranked third in the shot at 50-9.
Looking to make a mark in the 1,600 is Monterey distance ace James Welch, who is ranked fourth at 4:20.23.
Santa Catalina freshman Mikayla Revera is ranked third in the CCS in the 100 (12.40) and fourth in the 400 (57.14). She likely will not run both events on Friday.
Tori Teraji will gauge herself among the elite in the discus, where she has the third best mark in the CCS for North County at 115-9. Teammate Taylor Blaha is fifth in the triple jump (36-2) and long jump (17-5).
If you're gauging team honors, keep an eye on Santa Cruz in the boys division.
