King City Invitational

In its day, there was no bigger meet in the state.
The names of future Olympians such as Millard Hampton, Andre Phillips and Alvin Harrison graced King City for a day, leaving a trail of dust in their path.
Of course, the dirt is long gone, having been replaced by a lightening blue all-weather surface that just looks fast when you step on it.
It's the same material used for the track installed for the Olympic Games in 1996 in Atlanta.
Now, will teams that once flocked to south county return?
The King City Invitational is back this Saturday after a one-year hiatus, making it one of the oldest invitationals in the state.
Once upon a time, more than 50 schools filled the school parking lot with buses.
Expectations on Saturday are for about 15 schools to congregate back to King City. That's a good start.
There is a proud tradition in King City with this meet. Bringing it back was important.
