Tennis

Is there a changing of the guard in tennis?
Or have programs in Monterey County finally caught up with perennial power Stevenson?
Palma's 4-3 win over the Pirates was a huge milestone for its program. It had never happened before in 30 plus years.
Stevenson has dominated tennis in this county for three decades.
Oh, every now and then there's a challenger, lately from Carmel.
But it appears that more than one program is on the rise.
Monterey is unbeaten in seven matches. Pacific Grove is off to a 5-1 start this year while Alvarez has its entire team intact from last year's record breaking season.
Don't disregard York, who has CCS Singles runner-up Josh Pompan back. And Salinas has been a MBL threat for years.
This isn't the demise of a prominent program. Stevenson is going nowhere. But it's a healthy sign for tennis in this county.
