What happens in March likely changes in May.
Yet, one name that has already gotten the attention of his peers is Chase Pacheco of Palma, who leaped 22 feet in the long jump at the State indoor meet in February.
Palma's quest to three-peat as Gabilan Division champions gets a boast with the return of hurdler Devin Hinson, who missed a chunk of last year with a hamstring injury.
Hinson returns with the fourth fastest time in the CCS in the 110 high hurdles (15.12) and 300 IM (39.88). Lurking a stride behind is Alisal's Oscar Guzman (39.99).
Monterey distance ace James Welsh has the third fastest returning time in the 1,600 (4:17.08). Last year as a sophomore, he was seventh in the CCS in the metric mile.
Looking to make amends for a disappointing effort at the CCS finals in the discus is North Salinas' Mario Gonzales, who had the third best throw in the section last year at 164-8.
Seaside sprinter Cordell Reed is the top returning 100 meter sprinter at 11.03 and will be a factor in the 200 (22.40) this spring.
On the girls side, Notre Dame school record holder Alex Lathos will look to improve on her 2:15.00 in the 800, where she was eighth in the CCS last year.
Multi-talented field event specialist Taylor Blaha of North County comes into the season ranked in the CCS in the high jump (5-2), long jump (17-1) and triple jump (35-11).
Tatiana Lee of Seaside has the eighth fastest returning time in the 400 (58.40) while Elizabeth Alcala of North Salinas has the third best returning mark in the discus (112-2).
