Having attended 121 49ers games at The Stick, I've got a few memories stored in the bank to share over the next 17 weeks as the days of Candlestick Park are coming to a close.
Less than three months after tearing two ligaments and damaging cartridge in his left knee, Jerry Rice returned to the field on Monday Night Football against the Denver Broncos.
The 49ers were retiring Joe Montana's jersey on that Dec. 15, 1997 evening and Rice was back on the field in a showdown of two of the best teams in the NFL.
Rice caught three passes in that game, including a 14-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. But when he landed on his left knee on the touchdown, he suffered a broken kneecap.
This time there would be no magical return as Rice was done for the season. It was an emotional roller coaster night for 49ers fans.
