Track heartaches
The beauty of track and field, or the pain of the sport, is your season boils down to one meet.
It doesn't matter what you did throughout the spring. If you falter at the league finals or can't compete, you're done.
There's no automatic qualifying standards to the CCS like in swimming.
If you rush for 2,000 yards in nine games in football, but miss the finale, you're still going to earn all-league honors, maybe all state.
In track, all-leaguers are league champions. Being undefeated throughout the dual meet season does not count.
Just ask Palma's Devin Hinson, who had visions of competing in this year's state championships in the 300 intermediate hurdles.
A hamstring injury kept him from competing in Tuesday's trials. He's done.
