MTAL track and field
As athletes huddled together before embracing each other in pure jubilation, two long-time track and field coaches fought back tears.
Both won titles for the first time.
Yet, only one took home the league's perpetual track and field trophy.
"It's not bittersweet,'' said Stevenson boys coach Cleveland Thayer, fighting to finish his sentence. "The kids will remember this moment for a long time.''
The Pirates 103-102 win over King City Friday at the Mission Trail Athletic League championships didn't equate to a overall team title based on their dual meet record — as the Mustangs were awarded the title.
"We just don't have the depth to win dual meets,'' said Thayer, who brought 11 athletes to the MTAL finals, eight of which compiled 103 points. "This is still a first for this program.''
The same can be said for Santa Catalina, who ended Carmel's run of 16 straight MTAL titles with the programs first girls championship since its inception in 1980.
"Our coach has been here a long time,'' Santa Catalina 400 meter champion Lizzy Tardieu said. "We really wanted to win it for him as well as ourselves.''
