It's been billed for years as a preview to the Central Coast Section finals in six weeks.
But is it really?
Not all the elite athletes in the section are taking part in Friday's Top 8 track meet at San Jose City College.
One athlete that's missing is Seaside's Jayla Scholis, the defending CCS 200 meter champion and current section leader in the 100. She's not entered in either event.
Neither is Ryan Hall of Stevenson, who has soared 6-4 in the high jump this spring. Or Raymond Silver of Watsonville, who has a CCS leading mark of 6-7.
And if it's billed as a Top 8 meet, why are there 28 runners in the 1,600, 16 in the hurdle races and three heats in the relays?
The first thing that comes to my mind is that's a lot of extra rest between races that won't be there for the CCS finals.
It's still a very competitive meet. But it's not a preview of the section championships, maybe more like a mid-term to what potentially could unfold, minus a few elite athletes.
