With the peaking period right around the corner, and the league championships five weeks off, this is the time of the year where times and marks begin to drop.
The North Salinas Invitational is expected to attract 21 teams and over 1,000 athletes, including defending CCS champions Jessica Davis of King City (300 low hurdles) and Marcus Washington of Palma (long jump).
Three events worth watching include the boys 1,600, where Monterey's James Welsh and North Salinas' Ivan Pina are separated by less than a second.
Inches separate North Salinas' Mario Gonzales and Monterey's John Irving in the discus, while Omar Guzman of Alisal and Jacob Robante of North Salinas chase each other in the 300 intermediate hurdles.
CCS high jump leader Raymond Silver of Watsonville (6-6 3/4) will compete.
