Moving into the Monterey Bay League's Gabilan Division is the best thing that has happened for Seaside in girls hoops.
Having dominated the old MBL for over a decade, the Spartans seemed complacent to win the league. Simply put, they weren't always challenged. And it showed in the postseason.
That's not the case in the Gabilan Division
Yet, the Spartans have responded under new coach Jessica Haayer, jumping out to a 3-0 league start with wins over Salinas, Alisal and Notre Dame.
Of course, it helps having one of the premier players in the county in double-double machine Sabrina Neal, along with freshman sensation Marielle Tuazon, who is averaging 15 plus points a game.
But the Spartans are doing something else well -- playing defense, having held their last two league opponents under 30 points.
