Football quandary
Here is the problem with having an all-star football game during the heart of basketball season.
How are players that have been invited to the all-star game, yet are playing basketball -- going to be in two places at one time over the next two weeks?
Are you willing to miss a league basketball game -- with potential title implications at stake -- just to practice for a starting spot in one football game?
You can't abandon your basketball team.
Salinas High and South all-star football coach Steve Goodbody has told all basketball players on his roster that your priority should be to your high school basketball team first.
But what if players feel football should be their priority? What are basketball coaches suppose to do if a starter misses a handful of practices and potentially a game over the next two weeks?
I get college football scouts will likely be on hand to watch the Jan. 26 North-South all-star battle at San Jose City College.
And the reality is this is only effecting four or five basketball programs.
I know Goodbody would never encourage a kid to miss a game just to practice. But these kids have to get re acclimated to being hit with pads. This a football.
What this game is starting to do is create tension among teammates in basketball and forcing coaches to make difficult decisions.
I like this football game. I think it can work. It may help a kid get noticed. But why couldn't it have been played a week or two after football season concludes in December?
