Carmel forfeit

What a bold move by Carmel to forfeit its boys and girls basketball games at Pacific Collegiate for what the school deemed safety issues.
The Padres boys basketball team was undefeated in league play and coming off a big win over previously unbeaten Greenfield.
Now Carmel is locked in a tie at the top in the Mission Trail Athletic League with the Bruins at 5-1.
The two teams will only meet once in MTAL play, although there is a league tournament at the end of the year.
At the same time, you have to applaud the decision.
As difficult as it was to give away a game, Carmel felt strongly about the safety of its kids.
Carmel offered to host the games and give Pacific Collegiate the gate. But the Santa Cruz-based school declined.
The league commissioner has stated he believes the facility is adequate.
Now will other schools that have complained about the facility follow suit?

As a player for Carmel girls basketball, I dont think this situation could have been handled any better by our coaches. They were presented with a large challenge, but they chose our safety over our pride. I personally think we made the best decision we could. I would have been diving on the ground all game like usual, and with the conditions of that gym there was a very good chance i would have left seriously injured. All we can do now is hope the other coaches in our league support our decision to not play at that gym, and hopefully in the future we will not have to face a forfeit again.
