Basketball thought

I'm curious.
Do some programs play soft preseason schedules to build confidence -- or to make sure they have a .500 or better non-league record to qualify for the playoffs?
Probably a little of both.
Obviously some preseason battles have become yearly meetings. That's fine. Some are rivalries from the past. That's OK as well. And you can't control who you play in a tournament.
But the postseason shouldn't be the goal in December. It should be about building chemistry on the court. Improvement is the ultimate goal, isn't it?

I agree with your premise that some programs play soft preseason schedules, either to build confidence or ensure they'll have the .500 record to be playoff-eligible. For upper echelon teams, the posteason should be the goal in December. If they know they can finish at or above .500 in league, why not test your team in the preseason by playing other teams that will be in the postseason? Blowing out an opponent that would lose to your bench players doesn't help a team get better. A tougher schedule also carries weight in the CCS seeding meeting.
