I'm not sure anyone saw this as a potential battle for first place.
But it is.
This isn't foreign territory for the Pirates. Just two years ago they began the year 3-1 before falling 46-25 to Carmel.
The Padres have made it a habit of dropping 40 or more points on an MTAL opponent, having done it 15 out of their last 16 games -- including 13 straight.
Wasn't this suppose to be a retooling year for the Padres in the MTAL?
