Girls
Mission Trail Athletic League
1. Carmel: The two-time defending champions have size in the paint to go along with a sharpshooter.
2. King City: Not always on the same page during the preseason and a pair of injuries concerns me.
3. Greenfield: Set a school record with five straight wins to open the season.
4. Santa Catalina: Those four freshmen that started together are now juniors.
5. Gonzales: Building off last season's first playoff appearance in 15 years.
6. Pacific Grove: The preseason was not kind to the Breakers.
7. Soledad: Returning all-league guard Felicia Villarruel is back.
8. Stevenson: Can go nowhere but up.
Monterey Bay League
1. Christopher: Head coach Heather Stewart has made a habit out of turning programs into champions.
2. Seaside: The health of Victoria Dorn will dictate the direction Seaside goes.
3. North County: Priscilla Mora was unstoppable in the preseason. But she can't do it by herself.
4. Watsonville: The Wildcatz closed the preseason with five straight losses.
5. Monte Vista: Has not won a league title since it was a member of the SCCAL in 1998.
6. Monterey: Will endure growing pains with an athletic, but inexperienced lineup.
7. Pajaro Valley: Is 3-49 lifetime in the MBL — although it did snap a 41-game MBL losing streak last year.
Tri-County Athletic League
1. San Benito: A thorn in the Balers side the last two years has been North Salinas.
2. North Salinas: Darren Jackson's five freshmen should be nicknamed the Jackson 5.
3. Notre Dame: Here is your sleeper team in the TCAL.
4. Gilroy: The potential loss of Michelle Sosa for the year is a devastating blow for the defending champs.
5. Salinas: Two of its three non-league losses came in tournaments from San Benito.
6. Alisal: Defense isn't the issue. Alisal still has trouble scoring points.
7. Alvarez: The most improved team in the county is playing in the wrong league.
