Taken to task

Prepfan and mrvig00 --  I love these CIA names -- clearly don't like how Carmel produces points late in the game with reserves.
Now, as I said earlier, I PERSONALLY would not be throwing late in the game up by 45. Then again, I'm not the fourth string receiver dying to catch a pass.
I don't have a problem with either of you calling out Carmel. Some of it is justified.
But you can't just pick on the Padres for piling up meaningless points.
Monte Vista has beaten two teams this year by 63 and 47 points. Carmel has beaten two teams by 36 and 48 points.
Last year North County recorded a CCS best 76 points, beating teams by 43, 49 and 62 points. I never heard a concern about it.
King City hammered Marina by 71 points last fall. Please don't do it again on Friday.
Seaside beat two teams by 54 and 47 points last season.
And back in 2006, Pacific Grove put up 62 points against Carmel, throwing a touchdown pass with four minutes left in the game in a route.
If you don't like, you have to call everyone out. Not just one school.

It is an unfortunate distraction for a program that has come so far. Most local yokals want to support a small local public school having success. Nobody seemed to harbor this type of animosity towards PG or Seaside a few years ago.

John, why do you think this is the case with many local sports fans?

You'd have to ask them. My hunch is they are not fans of the coaching staff, or their kids were on the wrong end of those losses.

Let me refer you to my last comment, "Backups were in the game from their second possession of the 3rd quarter so it is not as though the backups did not have a chance to show they can play. After a certain comfortable lead (I would say 4 or 5 TDs) there is no reason why they could not have run the ball and run out the clock and yes there was a running clock in the fourth quarter. The score was 48-7 in the fourth quarter when Carmel was still throwing for touchdowns. I hate to break it to you and the Carmel coaching staff but this is not the BCS and you don't need to be running up the score. It is not okay to do it in College when it is adults playing and it is sure as heck not okay when it is kids are playing."
If that was not clear enough I do not care who is doing it, running up the score is not right PERIOD! I used Carmel as an example because I was writing in the blog under Greenfield Football where you were discussing the average margin of Carmel's scoring versus Greenfield. Besides, I cannot call out everyone else as I have not attended those other games you mentioned and I have been in the stands of those 3 games between Greenfield and Carmel. As for the CIA name, other than yourself, John, no one else here uses their real name so why change the status quo?

Local Yocal, I have no problem supporting local small public schools, not only do I work for the public school system but its the one I grew up in and where I continue to live in (Greenfield) today. The problem is supporting a small public school that, in my opinion, does not show its opponents respect. From what I have seen the Carmel coaching staff does not show respect to their opponents by running up the score when games are well in hand.
For example, I was at Greenfield's opening game at Avenal where the halftime score was 43-0, Greenfield came out in the second half and immediately put in their subs, final score was 43-8 and Greenfield ran their normal offense with the backups in the game. Not only were the backups able to get in the game and show the staff what they could do but they did it without embarrasing their opponents, so you tell me why is it that Carmel cannot do the same? From what I have seen based on final score over the last few years is that other teams had those lopsided wins few and far between where as Carmel is doing it on a weekly basis and its the without remorse like way that they are doing it.

mrvig - are you saying that Carmel backups were running some sort of special scheme at the end of the game? They were running the same plays as the starters. Carmel's offense is run and pass, not just run. WIth your reasoning, Greenfield when in the lead should pass because it would be doing something they are not good at - so what is Carmel to do? If they run the ball and score, it's the same complaint. You are upset about the final score. What's the difference? They were playing 2nd and third stringers and scored both times they had the ball (box score shows a rushing TD)

CHSSportsNut-you are going to have to come up with something stronger than that. Backups played the whole second half of both those games and Greenfield was NOT trying to pass or run up the score at either game.

2009
Stevenson 57-12
Greenfield 60-0
King City 58-0
Pacific Grove 78-6

2010
Monterey 51-14
Greenfield 56-23
Gonzales 63-20
King City 57-14
Pacific Grove 56-21

2011
North Salinas 56-20
Greenfield 55-7

I don't think you want to compare because those are just the really bad ones.

hs fan - Really? They were running the same plays as the starters? Hmmm, guess I was watching a different game late in the fourth quarter when they threw that 80 yard bomb. That was the only one of the kind that I saw. Pearson was only throwing the short intermediate passes not 80 yard bombs down the field. But I guess I was watching another game.

I guess I was not clear enough when I said that when up by 4 or 5 TD's in a game you run the ball and run out the clock, PERIOD! I was at the game and saw how this game went down I am not using box scores BUT if you want to use that reasoning check it out again and notice how much more passing there was in that game than running. Had they been running the ball and still scoring I would have tipped my hat and said good job BUT this is the third year in a row that they have a reasonably comfortable lead and they are not only going for it on 4th down instead of punting but also throwing the ball to run up the score.
