So much for the excuse that the labor lockout would hinder first year coaches and their progress in the pre-season.
 Seaside graduate and Carolina first year head coach Ron Rivera got his first win in his debut on Saturday. And Carolina looked good.
 However, I caution preseason optimism. The Lions are 11-2 over the last four years and haven't sniffed the postseason.
 So, yes there is hope for the 49ers and Raiders.
