Watsonville
How does a program with an enrollment twice the size of everyone else in the Monterey Bay League not compete for supremacy each season?
Two years ago the Wildcatz won a share of the MBL title. But that was their first title in 15 years, when they were a member of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League.
Last fall's 1-9 mark was one of the biggest dropoffs from the previous season of any team in the CCS. But if you're looking for a darkhorse in the MBL, don't sleep on Watsonville.
Receiver Lamar Cowans and his 42 catches for nearly 800 yards is back, as is tailback Fabian Serrano and his 800-plus rushing yards. That's two pretty good parts to start with.
Rebuilding the defense will determine the Wildcatz season. Last year they gave up 40 or more points six times. The only two teams that allowed more points were Pajaro Valley and Marina.
Watsonville has five teams on its schedule that reached the playoffs last year. Five wins is not out of reach.
