Tampa Bay Rays pitcher J.P. Howell has changed his uniform number to honor Carmel graduate and former Pacific Grove baseball coach Guy Dubets, who died last week at the age of 52.
Dubets, who worked with Howell on his pitching mechanics in college, has changed his number from 39 to 74.
The number change came from the alphabet — 7 for the G, 4 for the D.
A service for Dubets will be Saturday at the Carmel Mission.
