The track and field world in Monterey County lost an icon when Bill Kearney died on Saturday.
A one-time sprint star at Cal, Kearney was a coaching legend at Salinas High before retiring in the 1970's. He was also a starter at track meets for nearly 20 years and had an invitational named after him.
"He made an impact on more boys and girls than any other coach in any sport in the county,'' Carmel coach John Ables said.
