Football quick hits

We are going to hear a lot of talk over the next five days about Friday's Seaside-Palma battle. But the reality is it's a non-league game in Week 9.
Palma has already gathered a share of the TCAL title. Seaside has Monterey in two weeks. I'm not sure this game, this late in the season, serves either team's best interests.

Could Seaside be on the playoff bubble if it drops its final two games? A 6-4 overall record is not a lock when you play in a 'B' league, regardless of non-league schedule.
However, if the Spartans defeat Monterey in the season finale in two weeks, that insures no worse than a share of the MBL title.

If Monte Vista knocks off visiting Monterey on Friday, four teams from the MBL will go into the season finale all tied with one loss.
Monterey has won five in a row, with its only loss coming on the road. Monte Vista is 7-1 with its only loss coming at home. Something has to give on Friday.

I'm not sure anyone is taking King City seriously. Its run of six straight wins hasn't always been pretty. But you can't ignore a defense that has 23 interceptions in its last six games.
No doubt, the Mustangs will have to be creative on both sides of the ball and play error-free to just be in the game on Saturday at Carmel. Stranger things have occurred.

Good test of the calpreps.com predictions model.

Calpreps predicts:

Monterey over MVC 31 to 21

Palma over Seaside 35 to 21

Carmel over King City 42 to 10

Yeah, yeah, yeah. They play the games on the field and not by computer. So anything can happen. Just think it will be fun to see how close the calpreps model is on these three games.

Even with losses in the last two games, Seaside will have at least 20.5 points. (Could be higher if Atascadero wins or shares their league title.) Right now it looks like 20.5 points is a safe number. Bigger question for Seaside seems to be whether they will be seeded 8 in D IV or 8 in D III. (Carmel looks like they will be seeded 2 in D IV. Therefore, if Carmel is 2 and Seaside does end up as 8 in D IV, the only way they would meet would be in the finals.)

MVC is predicted to have 19.5 points and Alvarez 20.0. Both appear to be closer to the bubble than Seaside.

Of course still a lot of football to be played in the last two weeks. Things will get shaken up quite a bit if King City beats Greenfield and becomes an Automatic Qualifier. Same is true if St Francis CCC or Scotts Valley takes second in the SCCAL and gets that Automatic Quailifier spot.
