JC football battles

Saturday's games
Cabrillo (1-4) vs. Hartnell (0-5) at Salinas High Stadium, 6 p.m.: It's a fresh start for the winless Panthers, who open conference play. Both teams have given up 187 points this year. Cabrillo has struggled in the second and third quarters, having been outscored 118-25. Hartnell has been outscored 78-10 in the second quarter. Marquis Brooks has 498 all-purpose yards for the Panthers. Cabrillo quarterback Jerry Alvarez, who led Watsonville to an MBL title last year, has thrown for 670 yards. Fernando Olivarez has 20 catches for 359 yards. He's also averaging 27.4 yards on kickoff returns.
West Valley (0-5) at Monterey Peninsula (1-4), 6 p.m.: David Fales is coming off his best game as a collegiate, completing 19-of-29 for 200 yards and a touchdown. Former Palma teammate Bret Chernetsky caught a season high 10 passes. The Lobos need to spread the ball around with big targets Jake Davis and Gerran Gordon. Chris Nguyen, who starts on defense, caught a touchdown pass last week. MPC has blocked seven kicks this fall. West Valley has been outscored 277-44. Three times it has given up 62 or more points.
