Football quick hits

Since giving up 51 points in a loss to Carmel three weeks ago, Monterey's defense has shut down its last three opponents in the first half, allowing just 14 points. The offense has built leads of 20, 27 and 20 going into the fourth quarter in all three wins.

Emerging as one of the more exciting receivers in the area is sophomore Joseph Jakubowsky, whose yards after the catch are as impressive as his 28 catches for 512 yards.
Jakubowky, who has caught nine touchdown passes and rushed for two, will likely be Seaside's starting quarterback next year.

Palma's defense has not allowed a point in the third quarter. Of the 54 points it has given up, 35 have come in the fourth quarter when the game is already in hand. You're going to win a lot of games when you are plus 12 in turnover ratio.

Who would have thought that seven weeks into the season Monte Vista Christian would be the only undefeated -- not unbeaten -- team among the three leagues.
Granted, all six wins have come against teams that don't have winning records as of today. But didn't we say that about North County before it faced Seaside?
