Perhaps it was the new color scheme on their helmets. A better bet was first year coach Rodney Starr providing a little stability last fall.
For the first time in eight years, Soledad finished league play with a .500 record, closing the Mission Trail Athletic League season with two straight wins -- surpassing its league win total from the previous six years combined.
Adding to the excitement this year is Starr is back, meaning there is no coaching change at the top for the first time in five years.
But there are holes to fill, most notably the defense, which was gutted by graduation.
Three of the Aztecs four wins last year came in their final four games, creating optimism for this fall. Soledad lost two games by a touchdown or less. Reverse that and it's a playoff team.
