Tony Curtis will open camp with the 49ers as one of five tight ends battling for three spots.
Curtis, The Herald's Male Athlete of the Year in 2001, spent parts of last season with three different teams after four years in Dallas.
The Seaside graduates NFL career is at a crossroads.
Vernon Davis is an all-pro and a lock to make the 49ers. Delanie Walker will likely be the No. 2 tight end. That leaves Curtis and first year players Nate Byham and Joe Jon Finley.
At 6-6 and 250 pounds, Curtis can provide another run blocker in a two tight end offense. He can also play special teams, an asset to making any team.
But he has to stay healthy to make this roster.
