Phillies manager Charlie Manuel's decision to name his own player to the all-star team is the reason an all-star manager should not be allowed to name replacements.
Jayson Werth has 20 home runs in the Phillies home run friendly ball park. He's also hitting just .265. The Giants Pablo Sandoval is hitting almost 90 points higher.
Are we rewarding players for past accomplishments? This is why people think the all-star game is a joke.
I will say this. Werth is a better choice than teammate Shane Victorino, who was voted in by fans. But you can't tell me three of the top six outfielders in the National League play in Philadelphia.
