Rain and a possible thunder storm are in the forecast for Friday's State Track and Field Trials in Fresno.
Could this postpone or even cancel the meet?
It'll likely depend on how hard it rains or how long it lasts.
Anyone remember 1993.
That's when state officials canceled the state finals after it rained all morning in Norwalk. The problem was the meet wasn't scheduled to start until 3 p.m. And the rain quit at 1 p.m.
With synthetic tracks and runways, it was a poor decision. The meet was rescheduled two weeks later and North Salinas gathered a share of the boys team title.
This is different, because if it rains during the trials, you wouldn't have time to make them up the next day when the finals are slated.
And while you can run in the rain, I don't know if you could effectively throw a shot or discus, pole vault, high jump or even run the hurdles without the fear of injury.
If it does rain hard enough to postponed competition, one suggestion would be to move the trials to Saturday and run the finals on Monday. The CIF doesn't hold events on Sunday. But don't bring people back a week later.
