Can sloppy and sharp describe the same team?
At times Carmel looked like the team that went 12-0 last year, needing five plays or less to score on three possessions in a 42-13 route of St. Francis Catholic.
Yet, on other occasions, there were missed reads, missed tackles and penalties - 75 yards worth.
Sophomore tailback Garret McGuire had an auspicious debut, bolting 58 yards for a touchdown on his first varsity carry, finishing with 148 yards on just six carries.
And Carmel's defense recorded 14 tackles for losses.
If you're counting, that's 12 straight games in which Carmel has scored 40 or more points.
Oh, one other note. Carmel had its backups in the game late in the third quarter when the score was 35-7.
